Speaker(s): David Berry
Session Level: 200
Session Type: IT Pro / Architect
Anyone spending time with SharePoint knows that many decisions are dependent on a number of variables, leading us to the refrain of “It depends.”  Far from being definitive, we’ll peel back the layers of the SharePoint Onion and look at some of the decision points involved when building top-down and bottom-up.  Topics include web applications, site collections, content databases, security, navigation, taxonomy and anything else we can jam into the allotted time.
"It Takes a Village" - The Human Cost of SharePoint
Speaker(s): David Berry

SharePoint is a broad platform offering many different capabilities.  It is frequently a challenge for clients or even our own management to understand the roles involved in designing and implementing a proper solution, assessing the impact on IT teams to maintain it and most importantly helping the users adjust and accept the new tool in their lives.  In this talk we’ll break down the SharePoint Superman into manageable roles that can be filled by one or more people, including what is a SharePoint architect.  We’ll assess the maintenance impact to IT teams, including the division of the SharePoint farm administration roles.  Most importantly we’ll look at how the implementation of SharePoint 2010 can impact the organization and its users.
"The Myth of the SharePoint Unicorn: Staffing, Recruiting and Developing a SharePoint Team for SP2010 and Office365 Success"
Speaker(s):
Session Level:
Session Type: User Group
Based on popular demand from user group meetings, WSPDC will host a panel discussion by DC area leaders in the commercial and federal space on the changing landscape of SharePoint team roles and how to staff, recruit and provide professional development for SharePoint professionals of tomorrow. The "myth of the SharePoint unicorn" is near and dear to the heart of many SharePoint practice managers, architects and team leads who have watched the SharePoint ecosystem evolve since WSS3.0 and yet are faced with staffing, recruiting and hiring practices that call all SharePoint professionals "SharePoint developers." In its earliest days SharePoint was often deployed by "the SharePoint guy/gal" who did everything from administration to development to community management but the robust and mature development platform and solution architecture of SharePoint Server 2010, Azure, Office365 and Project Server require a team of highly skilled professionals beyond the Dev/IT Pro tracks outlined by Microsoft training and certification paths. Since blockchain is one of the most exciting technologies today, there is a high demand for skilled professionals. The demand for bitcoin, the greatest invention of blockchain, is also on the rise. Libertex is a broker through which you can trade forex derivatives. When you look at libertex broker vergleich, it is evident that this broker platform is unique and trustworthy compared to other platforms. Improperly staffed SharePoint teams can have serious consequences for service delivery and project success. This interactive panel will discuss best practices for SharePoint staffing for commercial and federal projects and will engage audience members with Q&A, exercises and real world examples. Look forward to seeing you there!

"Selecting either an upgrade or migration strategy to move from SharePoint 2007 (or 2003) to 2010 is a critical step  and requires an understanding of what the options are, what are the pros, and the cons associated with each approach.  What are the risks.  How much downtime will there be, and so forth.  Understanding the difference between a migration and an upgrade is also important since each requires different planning and can have a cost impact.

Better Together – Sharepoint and DoD 5015.2 Certified ECM technologies provide defensible Records Management and eDiscovery strategies
Speaker(s): Stan Wood
Session Level:
Session Type: Sponsor
SharePoint provides a dynamic collaboration environment for the rapid creation of content.  Adding to that is the explosive increase of content coming through email, rich media, transactional, and other legacy systems and it’s clear that the paper storage monster of the last decade has been replaced with a modern day digital storage monster that is comparatively out of sight and out of mind.  Companies and government agencies are under increasing pressure to bring varied content from multiple sources into a comprehensive knowledge management tool that supports records management and usage governance across diverse content sources.  IT departments are also being tasked to consolidate data storage and reduce the number of IT tools needed to support business and user requirements.   In this session, we will explore the advantages of leveraging a mature DoD 5015.2 certified enterprise content management platform in ways that address these issues while driving user adoption as a pathway to achieving managed knowledge and governance as well as enablement for defensible eDiscovery.
Beyond Approval: Intro to Creating Custom Workflow Actions

Custom workflow actions add functionality to your SPD toolkit—they let you design custom activities that execute custom actions such as performing complex actions or communicating with other applications. During this session you will learn how to create and code custom actions and make them available to the SharePoint designer.

Cloud Based SharePoint. For Real?

Cloudy with a Chance of SharePoint
Speaker(s): Joel Ward, Dave Shimko
Session Level: 200
Session Type: IT Pro / Architect
"Moving to “The Cloud” is a popular topic these days. Many companies and even the government are looking to consolidate IT resources, work within more limited budgets, and the desire to simplify the management of their infrastructure. Naturally, “The Cloud” seems like a great idea.

But is it? And what does this mean for SharePoint?

First off, we will describe the different aspects of “The Cloud,” mainly that The Cloud is really not just one type of technology and often isn’t The Cloud at all. In fact, cloud computing is just a fraction of the services available for hosting servers and websites and SharePoint. You can have a locally “private cloud” or a remotely hosted dedicated Saas (Software as a Service). You might consider a public cloud IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) or a dedicated virtual infrastructure. Or just a plain old rack server in a co-located facility. Which do you choose?

Unfortunately, there is no simple answer to that question. However, we will dive into the questions that you should ask in order to ensure you make an educated decision about where to go. Some examples:

• What does it mean for SharePoint?
• Do you really need the elasticity of something like Amazon EC2, or are your computing needs more stable and predictable?
• Do you want IaaS, where you are in charge of the SharePoint application?
• Or do you want SaaS, where the hosting provider manages the SharePoint application level for you?
• What about security?
• How do you budget for unforeseen costs?

So when your boss, CIO, or the President of the United States says, “We’re going to The Cloud,” you will have a better idea which “cloud” you should hop on to."

Controlling your SharePoint Chaos
Speaker(s): Adam Woodruff
Session Level:
Session Type: Sponsor
Meet Adam Woodruff, Quest senior product architect, during the Quest session learn valuable insight into ways to control your SharePoint chaos.
For many organizations, earlier versions of SharePoint were free-for-all environments that quickly outgrew the original scope of the implementation. They created management nightmares for an already-taxed IT staff and frustration for end users who needed a place to store business-critical information.
SharePoint 2010 offers a chance to get things right. To avoid repeating the sins of the past, you need a  solution to help:
• Managers understand and effectively govern your current SharePoint environment
• Administrators efficiently migrate, consolidate and restructure SharePoint on-premises and online, as well as proactively manage, protect and ensure SharePoint’s scalability for an improved user experience
• Developers speed and simplify the development and deployment of custom applications
Quest solutions give you the control you need to meet end-user demands, improve SLAs, and reduce the time, cost and complexity associated with SharePoint. Now you can control your SharePoint challenges so they don’t control you.

Creating a Custom Gatherer for the SharePoint Activity Feed
Speaker(s): Kevin Dostalek
Session Level: 300
Session Type: IT Pro / Developer
"The world has changed.  No longer are people willing to rely solely on email as the primary delivery mechanism for “pushed information”.  The fact that email puts control in the author’s hands rather than the receiver’s has driven technology such as RSS Feeds, which better respect the new opt-in culture.  Wherever you look these days, be it Facebook, Twitter, or [web 2.0 app of the month], it is likely that the primary information conduit will be in some form of “stream”.

The new SharePoint Activity Feed in 2010 is a phenomenal leap forward in SharePoint’s embrace of this changing information communications paradigm.  Users can opt-in to what they’d like to receive (or be targeted into by profile information) and treat the stream as a broadcast information radiator that by and large contains the exact information they need to perform their job better.

Out of the box, the Activity Feed only includes applications to capture events related to profile information changes and social computing activity within SharePoint (tagging, comments, ratings, etc.).   However, there is a huge opportunity to integrate the SharePoint Activity Feed with other external line of business applications to bring users an even greater ambient information experience in their “stream”.

In this session we will take a developer-centric view (that means coding) of how to develop a custom gatherer for these external sources and provision new SharePoint activity applications.  Because the Activity Feed is designed to scale to tens of thousands of users, there are some very specific data de-normalizing activity event multicasting methods that must be used.  At first these may seem a bit awkward, but once mastered, just about every activity application can be built using the same process."

Session Level: 200
Session Type: Federal
"Mike Herrity and Dave Coleman have been working together over the last four  years on the development of a mature SharePoint Solution for Twynham School in Christchurch, Dorset, UK. Having created their first SharePoint solution (The Revision Gateway) in March 2007 they witnessed an explosion in end user adoption which led to the rapid growth of the Learning Gateway. One of the main features of the Twynham School Learning Gateway is the strong ownership by end users. By creating resources, content and solutions focused on the needs of the end user Twynham has gained an enviable reputation for very high adoption. On a recent snow day 86% of students and 92% of staff chose to use the Learning Gateways to support their independent study and maintain productivity when the school was closed.

This session will focus on the story of the development of the Twynham School Learning Gateway. Covering key milestones from the methodology used to engage end users to the ways in which we improved productivity within the institution. We will cover the three differing topologies we have implemented from 2007-2010 as we have moved from a single server farm to a highly available virtualized solution.

The session will also focus on how Twynham has gained the most from the out of the box elements in SharePoint 2010 to our custom web part developments during our Parental Engagement strategy.

We will finish with a demonstration of our SharePoint 2010 set up and work with Microsoft during the SharePoint 2010 TAP Programme."

Developing a Hybrid SharePoint 2010 ERM/ECM Platform (SPaaS) Solution
Speaker(s): Errin O'Connor
Session Level:
Session Type: Sponsor
In developing any Enterprise Records Management (ERM) or (ECM) Platform, the key to long-term success is your organizations ability to develop a roadmap that takes into consideration the hybrid types of business and functional requirements that the systems user base will encounter in the many months and years to follow its launch.
A SharePoint Platform as a Service (SPaaS) with a hybrid approach will allow you to avoid so many pitfalls and the need to re-architect or modify the system in the future. The following are all possible within this SharePoint Platform as a Service:
• Records Management Service
• Workflow (Reusable) Service
• Business Intelligence/ Reporting Service (Dashboards, Scorecards, etc.)
• Collaboration Service
• Intranet Service
• Extranet Service
• A possible Internet facing SharePoint Service
• Mobile “Edge Device” Service
• Learning Management System Service (Training)
• Application Development Service
• Corporate Communication Service
• File Share Replacement Service
• Social, or I prefer, a Professional Networking Service (My Sites, etc.)
• Scanning Service (OCR) (Paperless/ Green Initiatives)
SharePoint 2010 can accomplish all of these elements, but it is absolutely crucial for you and your project team to be forward thinking and not hesitant to face these items that will inevitably come up in the next 24 months so why not be prepared.

Speaker(s): Alistair Pugin
Session Level: 200
Session Type: IT Pro / Architect
"SharePoint Deployment Planning Services allows Microsoft customers to use their assurance benefits to pay certified partners for SharePoint deployment and upgrade services. • How to adapt it to meet the requirements of the client
• What technical aspects are critical to the success of the workshops
• What information to capture to ensure partner and customer have a clear, shared vision of the information management requirements
• What the customer must provide to maximize the experience and overall outcome"

Does Size Matter? SharePoint's Value in a Small Company on a Shoestring Budget
Speaker(s): Edward Wells
Session Level: 200
Session Type: Business / Management
By now most people are aware of SharePoint’s value in large companies and government agencies.   But over half of America is employed by small businesses.  In the past, enterprise content/knowledge management systems were not seen as cost effective for this group due to the expense and expertise required to implement and maintain them.  SharePoint has helped to change that image and there is no business or group too small to benefit from a SharePoint intranet, regardless of human and monetary budget constraints.  This session will use real life examples to show the benefits of SharePoint for the smaller teams out there, as well as provide a roadmap for how implementation and roll out can proceed.  This session will also highlight various features of SharePoint that can be used or not used with the benefits and disadvantages of each option in small environments.  After viewing this session a person should have the knowledge to make a business case for their company setting up a SharePoint intranet, along with basic steps on how to proceed.
Driving User Adoption – How governance, training, and social networking create change in an organization
Speaker(s): Tiffany Songvilay
Session Level: 300
Session Type: IT Pro / Developer
"Also known as, ‘Everything you’ve never thought to ask about the business side of the deployment without the hassle of having to talk to the end users yourself.’ This session is the result of seven years of being the Business Analyst liaison between the SharePoint developers and the business. An upgrade to SharePoint is usually the last thing on people’s minds and almost never aligns with any of their department objectives. That means that often times, users don’t have to switch to SharePoint to get their jobs done and developers rarely make it any easier for them to do so because they are constantly under impossible deadlines with no budget and limited resources. You already know that poor user interface and rushed design with no information architecture equals failed deployments, now learn what you can do to ‘sell’ the users something they’ll buy into because they don’t give a flip about that first part.

If you want to be a part of a company that rolls out new technology, then you need this deployment to succeed. Don’t waste good code on a bad communications plan. Mark Rackley of SharePoint Hillbilly says, “I realize this is the type of session that most developers and admins may not jump to attend, but you HAVE to attend this session at least once.  Let’s face it, no matter how great your SharePoint deployment is, if you don’t get user adoption what good is it?”

Participants will learn:
- What makes SharePoint change different than other technology change
- Basic communication strategies
- How to anticipate the backlash and avoid a support nightmare"

Effective Requirements Gathering Workshops – How to organize and run them
Speaker(s): Ruven Gotz
Session Level: 200
Session Type: Business / Management
"Analyst: What would you like SharePoint to do?
Customer: Well, what can it do?
Analyst: Tons! Let me show you…

All too often, this is how conversations between analysts and customers/stakeholders begin, and it isn’t helpful to anyone. SharePoint has a vast array of capabilities, but if you start by describing or demonstrating what SharePoint can do and how the technology works, you will end up with customers who are confused and don’t know where to begin, or who have massively overblown expectations.

In this session, you will learn how to set up and conduct workshops with various stakeholders that will allow you to understand their real needs. You will then learn how to document and organize this information so that it is useful to the stakeholders and that will allow you to guide them through prioritization and planning.

You will learn when NOT to do demonstrations of SharePoint, and when and how to do demos that are powerful and effective.

Without education, there is no engagement. Without engagement, there is no encouragement.

Facilitated Thinking Environments in Sharepoint 2010
Speaker(s): Robert Beard
Session Level: 300
Session Type: Business / Management
"In a just-in-time approach, MindSights™ SharePoint Solutions (MindSP) has developed 25 separate MindSights™ Facilitated Thinking Environments (FTE) that provide the right questions, tools, and thinking switches (thinklets) to help individuals and teams think faster, more clearly, more creatively. With a just-in-time approach, an FTE delivers within a precise thought process the right questions to ask, the correct thinking tools to use, and the proper thinking methods to enhance personal or team thinking performance. FTEs function like a skilled consultant, educator or trusted friend who delivers timely advice by asking just the right questions, recommending the right cognitive tools to use, and offering successful methods and insights. FTEs put in place a comprehensive environment that surrounds knowledge-workers with cognitive tools using a set of specific tailored thinklets. FTE Thinklets can be viewed as mental triggers or “thought switches” that activate thinking patterns not commonly used.

This Session will showcase one specific FTE in Sharepoint 2010. Root cause analysis (RCA) is about returning the problem back to a prior condition or standard. The purpose of RCA is to take corrective actions and prevent the problem from ever happening again. Use this FTE application to determine the right point (root cause) where change can have the greatest impact on solving the problem. We will show you how a Sharepoint Team site has been configured to let a team accomplish a classic RCA in a collaborative virtual environment leveraging the functionality and collaborative capabilities of Sharepoint 2010. We will also provide an overview of the remaining Facilitated Thinking Environments."

Follow the Yellow Brick Road to SharePoint Mastery
Speaker(s): Paul Galvin
Session Level: 200
Session Type: IT Pro / Admin
"Winston Churchill famously said that SharePoint ""is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, in an enigma; but perhaps there is a key.  That key is Paul Galvin's SharePoint presentation.""**

Everyone wants to ""learn SharePoint,"" but how?  This presentation provides a distinct road map which for audience members to follow which will lead them to mastering SharePoint (in as much as it is possible to ""master"" SharePoint).   The road map directs you to the best resources and avoids dead ends.  Specifically:
- Create a personal and prioritized road map.
- Locate and use the best resources to achieve your goals.
- Reinforcing your knowledge by blogging, participating in forums and other interesting avenues.

If time permits, I will invite audience members to discuss their own learning experiences and share with the rest of the participants.

This presentation will not discuss specific vendors' training though it may come up in discussion or off line.

** Churchill actually said ""[Russia] is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma; but perhaps there is a key.  That key is Russian national interest."""

To do so, one needs to pay attention to ‘how’ a workflow/BPM solution for SharePoint turns process requirements into executable form. In this session, we will explore how a modern model-driven BPM solution, together with SharePoint, delivers a game changing paradigm to greatly accelerate the delivery of process excellence with business-enabled, process –driven agile development for continuous improvement with no code.
From Simple Search to Knowledge Management: Getting the Answers You Need from SharePoint
Speaker(s): Tom Polivka
Session Level:
Session Type: Sponsor
Every company and government agency can relate to the flood of inquiries hitting various departments – MIS, legal, HR, accounting, education, etc. Whether these queries come from inside executives, outside constituents, or even Capitol Hill, the same problems persist:
* Answers can never be produced fast enough
* Bottlenecks in the process are difficult to identify and remove
* Subject matter experts are difficult to locate and engage
* SharePoint search, by itself, is not sufficient but taxonomies may be overkill
* Coupling legacy ECM to SharePoint is too costly to deploy and maintain
With this presentation, we will attack some popular myths and show how SharePoint can be a very effective tool for managing your department’s collective knowledge. We’ll demonstrate how OOTB SharePoint, coupled with a knowledge base tool and simple workflow process, can answer the majority of your inbound inquiries in “self-service” fashion, route exceptions to designated SMEs and monitor the effectiveness of the overall process.

How the client object model saved the day?
Speaker(s): Liam Cleary
Session Level: 200
Session Type: IT Pro / Developer
"Too often we think that developing in SharePoint is some kind of dark art that only a handful of people in the world know how to do correctly. However, in SharePoint 2010, this has become more of a myth. SharePoint 2010 now has the ability to build powerful applications whether WinForm, Silverlight or even just plain old Web applications. These apps can perform simple to advanced CRUD operations without actually having to be a component installed into SharePoint or exist on the actual server.
Using the client object model allows anyone who wishes to build applications to do so with ease and speed. In this session, we will look at the capabilities of the client object model; understand where to use it and also how to use it to our advantage. And of course you will find out how it saved the day!"

Improving Search in SharePoint
Speaker(s): Shawn Shell
Session Level: 200
Session Type: Special Interest
One of most maligned features in SharePoint is search.  Some have even called it a “random document generator.”  However, is search success in SharePoint the exclusive responsibility of the technology or do we, the end users, administrators and developers have a responsibility?  Whether it’s contributing appropriate content, leveraging metadata, removing bad results or actually reviewing (and acting on) analytics, there are numerous ways to vastly improve end user satisfaction, information findability and overall search success.

During this session, Shawn Shell, Founder and Principal Consultant of Consejo, Inc. and Contributing Analyst at the Real Story Group, will discuss and show you ways to make material improvements in search without having to buy add-ons or expensive search tool replacements.

Information Architecture and Enterprise Search: Better Together
Speaker(s): Agnes Molnar
Session Level: 300
Session Type: End User
"Planning your Information Architecture is one of the most important factors that’s required for a successful deployment: well-organized documents and items, metadata management, Content Types, Workflows, etc. are what are you need to be familiar with. The more content you have, the more important is a well-planned and well-organized Information Architecture.
But storing the information is not enough. You also need to find the stored items and to use them in an efficient way. Enterprise Search is indispensable in this story: it is the part of your Information Architecture and completes it at the same time.
This session will demonstrate the relationship between these two as well as will demonstrate some best practices in order to help you to achieve a better and more optimal Information Architecture – integrated with Enterprise Search, all based on SharePoint.

Management of Physical Assets and Records with FileTrail for SharePoint
Speaker(s): Steve Marks
Session Level:
Session Type: Sponsor
SharePoint 2010 provides a great platform for managing electronic documents and records. With a rich feature set for applying metadata, retention policy and legal holds to content, organizations can build a global ECM solution. However, when it comes to managing physical items and physical records, SharePoint is missing key features. In order to manage physical items you need to print labels that you can stick on a physical object, have barcodes with intelligence that can perform actions like check-in/check-out and move, as well as shelving/space management and more. In addition, organizations can optimize management and tracking of physical items with RFID so item locations are updated in real-time. In this session you will see how companies like BP and Black Elk are using FileTrail for SharePoint to leverage their investment in the SharePoint 2010 platform to manage physical items.

Microsoft SharePoint 2010 takes a giant leap forward from previous versions. It includes many new features and capabilities which allow many customers to explore the options for upgrading and consolidating their SharePoint servers. Learn the top five best practices for upgrading to SharePoint 2010 to ensure a successful deployment. We’ll show you how to upgrade from WSS 2.0, SharePoint 2003, WSS 3.0, or SharePoint 2007 to SharePoint Server 2010 and SharePoint Foundation 2010. The session will also show how to handle complex upgrade scenarios, including 32-bit to 64-bit upgrades and the use of PowerShell to extend and automate migration operations. You’ll also learn how to handle granular and partial migrations and re-structuring of list, library and site content during migration and how to take advantage of new site templates in SharePoint 2010.

Despite the feature improvements that have propelled SharePoint 2010 to its current status within collaboration and content management circles there are still some considerations that have slowed enterprise adoption. One of the main challenges is large volumes of content. SQL Server wasn’t designed to house large volumes of Binary Large Objects (BLOBs). Managing BLOBs requires a significant share of SQL Server’s I/O, CPU and RAM cycles, without offering any benefits of storing these BLOBs in a relational database. The solution to this problem is to offload these BLOBS from the SQL database. Therefore, we will also be looking at how Metalogix has been enabling customers to scale their SharePoint implementations to handle large data volumes whilst still remaining within Microsoft’s boundary limits and supportability guidelines. This has allowed our customers to improve SharePoint performance, ease administration and reduce costs.

Speaker(s):
Session Level:
Session Type: Sponsor
Using Davinci Migrator for your migrations from 2003 or 2007 platforms to SharePoint 2010 allows you to plan out your migration, prioritizing sites and site collections, cleaning up and restructuring as you migrate, identifying potential problems before you migrate, and then giving you more visibility and control over the migration. Davinci lowers the risks associated with migration, such as system downtime,  undocumented customizations that could extend the project, and the entire attempt-fail-fix-attempt-fail cycle. In this sessions we will demonstrate a complete end-to-end migration using Davinci.

Speaker(s): Michael Hinckley
Session Level: 200
Session Type: Business / Case Studies

Office 365 – SharePoint Online Out-of-the-(Sand)Box
Speaker(s): Juan Santiago
Session Level:
Session Type: Sponsor
With the launch of Office 365 Microsoft has begun a campaign to transform the cloud into a defined business solution for organizations around the world.  A key feature of these offerings is SharePoint Online which provides information sharing, collaboration, and even website publishing to Office subscribers.  SharePoint Online is critical in providing focus for the tools available to Office users in the cloud.  As anyone who has worked with SharePoint knows though, this does not diminish the need for customizations of solutions to suit organizations adopting a cloud strategy.  The need to change the configuration, customize the look and feel, and extend the framework to a specific business need or process remains.  To do this in SharePoint online will require understanding the Sandbox Solution.
During this session we will define what a Sandbox solution is and how to effectively establish expectations, define requirements, and lay the foundation for the solutions organizations will be able to build to help make their Office 365 implementation a success.  We will also discuss what the limits to the sandbox really are and how you can take advantage of these features for your deployments.  Remember, Sandbox solutions are not just limited to Office 365.  These are re-deployable solutions that can exist within hosted and on premises SharePoint systems as well.

Office Apps and SharePoint Apps – Client and Server Connected
Speaker(s): Adam Macaulay
Session Level: 100
Session Type: End User
Do you have SharePoint? Have you built one of those Composite Applications you hear so much about? Perhaps you have a great SharePoint Application like CorasWorks PPM, EPM Live, or SharePoint Service Request from Crow Canyon? Whatever application you may have you probably aren’t taking advantage of the Client Platform that each of your users have. Do you have Access, Excel, Word, SharePoint Workspace, or any others? Perhaps the issue is user training and support. Let’s answer some simple questions, what can we do, what does it give us, and is it valuable enough to warrant the support. Better yet, how can we get users to support themselves. We’ll learn how to connect Outlook to our applications, not just the data but the views too.  We’ll learn how to use Access to interact in a way that is familiar to our users. What about leveraging Excel to Report on our data or even manipulate it. How can we use SharePoint Workspace to take it offline and viably manage multiple applications at once. Finally we’ll look at how we can leverage a Knowledge Base to help users help themselves. In the end you have a Server and you have Client, why not get the maximum ROI by doing something with both instead of limiting one or the other.

Practical Powershell for SharePoint
Speaker(s): Joe Capka
Session Level: 300
Session Type: IT Pro / Admin
"With the release of SharePoint 2010, Powershell has been become a full-time member in the SharePoint professional's tool belt. This talk explores a number of practical tasks that all SharePoint professionals whether developers or IT pros will find useful.

The talk is primarily composed of scenarios that a developer of IT Pro would encounter in daily working with SharePoint. Each scenario is solved using Powershell, and the solution is created as part of the live demo. Most of the scenarios explore how SharePoint professionals can automate tasks that would otherwise require manual repetitive efforts, or how Powershell can be used to perform tasks that are not possible through other interfaces.

There is an emphasis made on when Powershell is the right tool for the job, what the unique abilities of this tool are and what opportunities it offers.

The talk makes use of the new SharePoint 2010 Cmdlets, but also diverges into more advanced techniques such as scripting and using the SharePoint object model from Powershell.

The audience is meant to get an insight into the true power of Powershell and are meant to be inspired to start using Powershell in their day-to-day tasks. They are also meant to realize that the power of this tool requires great care when using the tool, especially when using third party or downloaded scripts.

This talk differs from many of the SharePoint Powershell talks in that it goes beyond showing the features that SharePoint and Powershell offer, and starts using these features to solve real problems"
Practical Tips to Increase SharePoint Adoption
Speaker(s): Kanwal Khipple
Session Level: 100
Session Type: Business / Management
You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink. The same analogy is true for SharePoint adoption.  Despite having SharePoint within your organization, end users continue do their work the old fashioned way via email threads, file shares, paper based approval, etc. There is no guarantee that the solution will be adopted.   You are getting no ROI for SharePoint - even if users are involved in every step of your SharePoint solution.  Attend this session, to learn techniques I've used to increase adoption of SharePoint solutions that have become slow or stalled.

SharePoint 2010 – Let’s Automate This Process
Speaker(s): Johnathan Lightfoot
Session Level: 200
Session Type: Business / Case Studies
"Long ago when computers were introduced we were promised a world in which most of our most mundane tasks would be taken over by a computer.  However, if you go into most organizations you will still see many business processes being done by people.  Meanwhile the computer sits idly by on a desk showing weather updates.

With SharePoint 2010 you are able to use not only the browser based out of the box Workflows but you can also use SharePoint Designer 2010 in order to edit those out of the box ones along with creating your own custom workflows.  And as an added benefit Visio 2010 can also be used to prepare workflow templates to further create custom workflows.

This session will use actual business cases to show you how SharePoint has been utilized to automate business processes using workflows.  I will show you how the out of the box workflows are powerful and can handle some of the more common of business processes.  We will then progress to how the out of the box workflows can be modified using SharePoint Designer 2010.

Creating workflows will also be covered; this session will go into how SharePoint Designer 2010 can be used to quickly put together custom workflows in order to provide routine solutions for automating some of the more intermediate level business processes.  The out of the box and SharePoint Designer 2010 workflows are great if you have an already established and documented business process.  On the other hand, what do you do when the business process is not clearly defined or documented?  This session will wrap up with how Visio 2010 can be used to flowchart a business process and then we will take this flowchart and use SharePoint Designer 2010 to create a workflow."

SharePoint 2010 and Office Web Applications
Speaker(s): Srini Sistla
Session Level: 200
Session Type: End User
Browser based viewing and editing of office documents? This has been a much appreciated and needed requirement that industry has been asking for. We rely on various other online applications to address this requirement to some extent (google docs for example) but the fact is that they don’t address everything we need on an enterprise level. It would be so good that we still use Office applications and even better - get access to them online over web for viewing and editing. SP2010 and Office Web Apps provide you with the power to carry where you go and become location, machine agnostic.

SharePoint 2010 Business Intelligence Features
Speaker(s): Srini Sistla
Session Level: 200
Session Type: IT Pro / Developer
Why do you need Business Intelligence (BI)? As a matter of fact, BI is a comprehensive solution to analyze and make key decisions based on your pre-historical information. This simple rule or logic does apply ranging from monitoring your low-budget expenses to huge financial organization which typically are valued in millions. It’s always challenging to decide on “How and what platform do I have to leverage to utilize BI effectively for my organization?”  Microsoft SharePoint 2010 is the answer. You might have plethora of tools available; however it would be wise to utilize a platform that would meet your business needs and you are well versed with.  MS SPS 2010 ships with BI features that would help you steer in right direction. When I refer to BI features they are not limited to set of multiple components like Office applications, Reporting etc. but include “services” such as Excel, Visio, BCS, Performance Point etc. It is not in my interest to educate you about the capabilities of a thick client; it is interestingly provoking to discuss how well you can integrate them with web technologies rather than ending up as a “desktop application use-only” style. Well the best of SharePoint 2010 is that you can integrate these client applications with SharePoint web application and still retaining the desktop experience and produce needed results. Upon completion of your reading this article, you would have a complete understanding of newly introduced BI Features in 2010 and their integration with Office 2010 applications.

This session will provide best practices on how best to gather your organization’s SharePoint 2010 environment’s mobility, cross-browser/ cross-platform, and compliance business and functional requirements.
When implementing your SharePoint 2010 environment, it is critical to gather your organization’s mobile requirements, such as:

SharePoint as an Application Development Platform
Speaker(s): Sanjay Thakur
Session Level: 300
Session Type: IT Pro / Architect
Given the increasingly ubiquitous SharePoint in today's enterprise environment, it behooves the architects to leverage the SharePoint Framework to develop and host common applications required by the enterprise. The increased boundaries and limits on lists in SharePoint 2010 coupled with the powerful SharePoint development framework to create custom content types and fields pretty much allows you to use SharePoint lists as mini relational database. The technique revolves around leveraging the new Authorization Object Model of SharePoint to create a SharePoint list based "Application Authorization Service" which then authorizes users to access numerous lists through a "Custom Application in 14 hive" or through the default UI exposed by SharePoint. The powerful and extensible Fields and Content Types add required flexibility to the SharePoint lists to be used as data storehouse for custom apps. With little or no customizations to Authentication, Document Management, BCS and Search one can easily leverage these tools to provide powerful apps that a typical enterprise would need and that too without any new software purchase. Additionally the maintenance procedures for the application are minimized since this infrastructure would overlap with SharePoint maintenance for the enterprise. Having said that, this approach needs a careful analysis of the usage patterns within an enterprise and a thorough cost/benefit analysis. This session abstracts the approach followed for a real life customer and presents it in a generic fashion focusing primarily on the design.

SharePoint Governance - The Art of the Possible
Speaker(s): Linc Williams
Session Level:
Session Type: Sponsor
When you hear the word governance, one often thinks only about control…controlling the way we think, the way we work and what we can and cannot do. From an IT perspective, governance planning and implementation is an absolutely necessary tool to maintain control around an ever expanding SharePoint environment. From an end-user perspective, governance is often perceived as excessive control and limitations. In this session we will explore how to plan the controls, checks and balances we need while not forgetting that the main ingredient in any good system is to satisfy users who want to use it. This session will show that true governance should help users at all levels utilize SharePoint to its fullest extent. We’ll review how to create groups to develop and maintain SharePoint governance. These groups are at all levels from executive level leaders to end users with business and SharePoint knowledge. They help shape the services offered, and without them, your SharePoint implementation is one step closer to failure.
We will learn:
• How cookie cutter governance documents do not progress your organization and how to break out of the documentation rigmarole.
• How to address the 7 major elements of a good governance framework and how they affect your organization.
• The common patterns for establishing a great governance body.
• The common pitfalls of SharePoint Governance and how to avoid them.

SharePoint in the Cloud
Speaker(s): Matthew Lathrop
Session Level:
Session Type: Sponsor
Many companies rely upon Return on Investment (ROI) when making technology strategy decisions, but few take the time to actually determine how much that strategy will cost over time. That's unfortunate, because without estimating the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), ROI is meaningless. There's no way of knowing how large an investment is actually being made.
That's particularly true when companies decide whether to use an IT hosting provider or take the do-it-yourself route; Buy v. Build.  Because managed hosting is presenting a complete solution, all costs are on the table from the start. By contrast, in-house hosting often involves hidden costs that aren't surfaced until the do-it-yourself project is well underway.
Hidden cost when trying to ‘build’ an infrastructure will be buried in three phases; Capital Expenditures (CAPEX), Hardware Deprecation and overall infrastructure maintenance.
With the introduction of Public Cloud and Private Cloud infrastructures, it truly allows for a more SaaS based SharePoint deployment with better utilization of resources and Global deployments.
SharePoint in the State Government Agency
Speaker(s): Joy Earles
Session Level: 200
Session Type: Business / Management

Public-sector businesses rarely get top attention when talking about “wow-factor” SharePoint sites. Their implementations tend to be more functional than “sexy,” more content-restricted due to mandates, and less extravagant due to budget restrictions. Yet government agencies with geographically dispersed offices are excellent candidates for the collaboration and document management features of SharePoint, and the ROI for these businesses can be impressive. This session discusses the specific benefits gained with SharePoint in two mid-sized (approx 1000 users) state agencies, the challenges posed by the more restrictive government work culture, and the lessons learned in implementation, user training, site structure, social features, and governance.

SharePoint Multilingual (2007/2010)
Speaker(s): Errin O'Connor
Session Level:
Session Type: Sponsor
Corporations that have offices in diverse geographical areas might need to cater information to each country in its specific language. Traditional multilingual implementations rely on separate environments for each language. Microsoft attempted to provide a solution with SharePoint 2007/2010 multilingual site publishing. The provisioning of a multilingual SharePoint involves the configuration and management of the following:
 Language packs
 Setting the default language based on the user
 Site variations: Synchronizing sites' content across multiple environments. The MOSS 2007 and SPS 2010 publishing feature allows the propagation of content across variations sites.

SharePoint on a Diet, Developing for Mobile
Speaker(s): Harold Smith III
Session Level: 300
Session Type: IT Pro / Developer
"Almost every agency within the Federal Government has invested in Microsoft SharePoint and its related services.  Agencies have leveraged SharePoint to deliver content, build workflows, collaborate, and deliver documents to end users.  SharePoint has become an everyday tool to most federal employees and contractors.

With the outpouring of mobile devices and mobile technologies that have inundated the commercial market in the last few years, the technology has reached a point that it is filtering into the Federal Government, providing a secure mechanism to access data on the go.

Devices such as Smart Phones and Tablets have given agencies new ways to utilize the workforce to consume information on the go.  No longer is the typical worker tied to their desk to perform their daily tasks.  No longer are workers in the field limited to what information they had before leaving the office.

Bridging SharePoint services to mobile devices has some severe challenges.  Natively, SharePoint is bandwidth intensive.  Browsing a SharePoint site on a mobile device utilizing a cellular connection provides an extremely slow connection – to the point the site and content are unusable.  Browsing and editing list content is the same, creating extreme user frustration.

We will discuss our lessons learned from developing “Low Bandwidth” sites for the Department of State and how these apply to mobile devices."

So you want to implement SharePoint in your organization... What now?
Speaker(s): Edmond Avanesian
Session Level: 100
Session Type: Business / Management
"Cloud Computing, Social Network, Web 2.0, Enterprise 2.0, Gov 2.0, Collaboration, Twitter, Blogs, Wikis, ROI, Digg, Flickr, and not to mention a slew of other homonyms and acronyms. After we've got our cheat-sheet to help us out, and think that some of those buzz words are actually business worthy, where do we go? We know that we can't continue running ""business as usual"" when times are changing by the second as is the nature of business with our partners, competitors and fellow public sector agencies. One of the new enterprise platform solutions from Microsoft to help address these concerns is SharePoint 2010.

However, before jumping in, do you know what you need to support the project from your agencies end? As great as SharePoint can be, it is not a complete solution just out-of-the-box (no matter how many ways you try to convince yourself). You don't need to have the ENTIRE project mapped out up front, but don't be fooled, you will need to bring some knowledge, decisions and ideas to the table to get (and keep) things moving.

This presentation will discuss some high level things that should be taken into consideration before embarking on the SharePoint 2010 journey. Some of the topics will include:
• What SP2010 ISN'T
• What SP2010 IS (could be)
• Questions to answer BEFORE deciding to implement SP2010
• Organizational Readiness
• IT Readiness
• End User Readiness
• Training Readiness"

Stepping into Social Computing with SharePoint
Speaker(s): Jay Leask
Session Level: 200
Session Type: Business / Management
"Social Collaboration is a series of business cases solved through collaborative interaction and social networking: find experts; build profiles; network; find mentors and mentees; have interactive, semi-immediate discussions; the ability to group-create documentation, white papers and proposals; to share experiences and personal knowledge with others; to comment on, rate, and tag content throughout; a social water cooler for geographically dispersed teams; a way to link all collaborative experiences (meetings, videos, presentations, etc).

Enterprise software requires the ability to integrate with all types of employee resources: organization-wide search, content management, people systems, mentor systems, workflow processes, etc …

SharePoint provides a proven technology for enterprise computing but does 2010 come far enough towards Social Collaboration to be considered a stand-alone Enterprise 2.0 solution?  David and Jay will take you through a detailed product over view of SharePoint 2010’s social capabilities and present to you business cases where using third party solutions, be-they built on top or SharePoint or stand-alone, may be the best case. This instructor led workshop is for those in your company who are responsible for providing training in SharePoint 2010. It is not a workshop for beginning level SharePoint users, but a training ground for potential in-house trainers. • Are you preparing to train them on SharePoint 2010?
• Do you want to make sure you train them on the essentials without risking "information overload?"
• Would you like a way to test their "knowledge absorption" after your training ends?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, plan to participate in this unique "train the trainer" workshop. You will learn about a new site manager certification program that is currently being developed by the SharePoint End User Community. Share your own ideas and experience to directly impact the program and test development. Learn about the planned modules of the training program, how a certification test can be beneficial to you and your trainees, and tips for making sure their learning doesn't stop after your training class ends.

It will also show how using configurable commercial software, as compared to custom-developed
software, can dramatically shorten implementation time, reduce project risks, and slash overall deployment costs.

Write it Down! - Documenting your SharePoint Projects
Speaker(s): Tiffany Songvilay
Session Level: 100
Session Type: IT Pro / Admin
"If you've ever been a new team member or vendor on a SharePoint project, then you know how frustrating it is to try to hunt down 'the documentation.' Things like a statement of work and functional specifications are essential to business analysts and project managers trying to keep a project scope from creeping out of control and beyond next year's budget. This session is important for contractors and clients alike. Without the right documentation, there is nothing to prove that the client asked for it (and is now insisting it be done free of charge) or anything that says that the developer delivered everything the client paid for. Documentation is the main reason why SharePoint project communications break down and timelines get pushed back and budgets skyrocket.

Come to this session and learn the names of the documents you need and the titles of the people responsible for writing those documents. If you’re new to the BA role, you may not even know what a functional specification is and if the company is new to SharePoint, then they don’t know to tell you to write one. Or worse, that a .NET developer is being asked to write a style guide. This session is about making sure that documentation is a deliverable and that project teams don't get so caught up in the deadline that they never stop long enough to make sure that someone is writing it all down.

Participants will learn:
- what documents your project team needs
- whose job it is it to write each document
- where to find free samples to start from"
Zen and the Art of SharePoint Troubleshooting
Speaker(s): Stephen Heister
Session Level: 200
Session Type: IT Pro / Admin
Sometimes troubleshooting anything can be a frustrating experience. Since SharePoint is a “system of systems” it has been known to create some unique challenges that can quickly make things complicated. Finding the right information, configuring the correct logs, and understanding what each component does can make the difference between a minor error and days of frustration. While it may at times seem like some people are just “born with” an ability to troubleshoot there are methods the rest of us can use to systematically locate and eliminate errors. The goal of this session is to go beyond common issues and their fixes by also looking at effective techniques for troubleshooting SharePoint. The session will also cover where to go for advice, how to tell if it is good advice, and will point out some tools and other resources that can help.
